The scenery and pollution of Lake Koman
Martin Fletcher writes in the Financial Times about his impressions from his latest journey through the Accursed Mountains.
In his richly detailed travel report, the pollution of Lake Koman could hardly go unmentioned.
“…the lake’s beauty was spoiled by thousands of plastic bottles floating on its surface,” Fletcher writes near the beginning.
When I read it, I remembered the game I played with my brother on our last trip to the Albanian Alps this summer.
On the ferry across Lake Koman, my brother chose sticks. I chose plastic bottles.
We had to count them whenever one came into view, and whoever had counted the most at the end would win.
But it all ended quickly once I passed my first 100 bottles while he was still at forty-something.
The bottles had upset nature’s balance!
A plastic bottle was more likely to have fallen into the lake than a stick or a twig from the forests along Lake Koman!
